But seriously, he comes from the ultra-mod-contempo world of studio-perfection & DMs [drum-machines], AWA poly-rhythm/ostinato/technq awa inter-dependence land, so naturally he is a product of this awa his desired areas of excel...
Undeniably he has amazing technq & ability, of course. Scary rock solid time almost 2 the point of perfection...which in turn can lead to seeming un-groovyness. But I nevertheless respect & admire him...like it or not; take it or leave it, he is a clinic-marvel, no doubt. I take what I will, the great from him, in a positive way, & leave those aspects that i don't want. Pete C said it best, i think.

Of all these mod guys, who are indeed great at what they do IMHO [the 2 MMs for inst], I still pref the playg of a cat like, say, DiCenso over all in this veign. Very hip, musical, awa greasy pocket when he wants...Kennedy, Husb, Omar, Ersk, Gadd, Vega, too. Vince, Novak, & Weck on much stuff AW, of course.
Virg has more grease [if i can be allowed that ;-)] than either the 2 MMs or TL...[altho he can be machine-like too when he wants!!] [img]tongue.gif[/img] But they're all facility-monsters.

Just re-read in an old Jeff Ocheltree interview that both Buddy and Bonham used to check out Cobham's gigs. That would have been cool to see...
I saw a clip from here with Mangini playing the zeppelin tune "Kashmir". All i can say is that this guy can PLAY music.
I'm however intimidated how he manages to hide anything musical in this clip! [img]eek.gif[/img]
Just seen the video - awful. It's the way he looks up with his eyes closed and smiles really smugly and exhausted, as if he's just shot his load oll over the drums!

Yeah, I've seen him in clinic & he can do some amazing independence things awa great technq.
But i agree; this clip portion, albeit it IS just a clip - is just awful. I'm sure there were better sections of his solo to choose from [I know what some of u r saying right now - that he even had THIS section is ?able ;-p]
Its beginning fooled me...lulled me into thinkg he was going to develop some hip motifs of which he is fully capable of [from the 1-hand w DB stuff, which was allright]...but then it quickly digresses into a gimmickry spanky-wanker-doo...
It actually made me long for a Marco or TL spank-wankerdoodle! Do I hear a Virgubatory binge, anyone?! This type of thing should silence & CURE the Weckl-pooperz once & fer all!! /;-p
Bad choice for a clip for furthering the cause of music, i suppose...OK if you want the impressionable speedfreek rock kiddies to buy your drums!

Where's Gene Hoglan when you need him to take a drummer with lovely wrist corsages, as well as a certain "pooched out succulence" like a certain singer songwriter everyone likes, and drive him head first through an 18" floor tom?
